GRACIE CONVERT MAYBE

Gracie Convert presents ‘Maybe’, a relateable heartbreak single with a feminist twist. Before diving into the track itself, let’s hear from this young singer-songwriter who candidly comments on the modern pressures placed on women: “There is so much pressure on women to look and act a certain way, we’re taught that our value lies within our physical attractiveness and our ability to fit a certain stereotype, be sweet and play along, be fun, but not say too much.” This is plays into what’s expected of women post breakup. Through a blissfully nostalgic RnB production, Convert subtly spins out patriarchal oppression to convey how the image-fuelled world we live in can deeply affect female empowerment. “Maybe if I had a thinner waist? Maybe if I had a bigger ass? Maybe if I just stayed in my place?”; these are the questions that lace the yearning chorus and reveal the gas lighting that women all too often experience not only from partners, but also from the media. We love the nineties RnB aesthetic of Gracie Convert’s ‘Maybe’, just as much as we dearly appreciate this feminist message. - Hannah Thacker
